Spirit X Strike is an action arcade game developed by a single developer, inspired by intense titles like God Hand and Ninja Gaiden, along with anime like Dragon Ball Z. The game explodes into style and energy right from the start, with flashiness very smooth in combat. An instant counter, super strike, and spirit mimic all highlight the more interesting aspects of the fights. The player can link attacks, juggle enemies, kick deflected bullets, and copy abilities of the foes for powerful boosts. The combat is deep every fight feels like a performance.
Every detail reflects the dedication of the developer, fluid animations, sharp controls, and super satisfying finishers. The game is ambitious to deliver a polish rarely seen among indie game gems. Yet, it is not flawless. For example, the defensive mechanisms can prove quite annoying. The timing needed for the parry is particularly strict; sometimes dodges do not flow well, while at other times enemy attacks track too well, making avoidance seem random. Also, those lock-targeting systems and camera angles are a bit tricky during boss fights. Some of those battles resemble a memorization of patterns rather than skill, which really clashes with other aspects of combat.
There are some technical bugs as well. Even on really high-end PCs, such as those with RTX 3080 or even 4070s, frame dips suffer during the forceful moments in the game. Freezing animations or frozen on-screen bugged enemies also sometimes break immersion during gameplay. Most of these problems are normal for Early Access games.
However, it is definitely worth it. The game has six areas, six bosses, as well as four difficulty modes, which can be unlocked only after the first playthrough. The game is active all the time, developing further and listening to new ideas while bringing in updates. Replayability is high with combat. The limited stages do not matter much because of the diversity of moves and weapons, along with enemy types.
