Mario Turns 40 This September
Nintendo is gearing up for a major anniversary, very big by September 2025, when the beloved plumber Mario turns 40. Since the resurfacing of the Mario anniversary account created in July 2020, fans have begun to discuss it. That easily led to memories of the 35th celebration, when Nintendo dropped little bits of hints towards revealing major announcements.
So for me, a devoted follower of Mario from childhood, events like this would always thrill me. These are the special moments when Nintendo goes all out for the celebration, and I’m expecting grandeur for this year’s installment.
Why This Anniversary Matters for Switch 2
Indeed, this is just one of those anniversaries that Nintendo uses to showcase big ideas. This year’s timing was perfect because of the following:
- A new Mario movie coming out in 2026
- The freshness of Switch2 in the market
- Nostalgia is at a peak for the old Mario titles
- Rumors and Possible Announcements
Super Mario Galaxy 2 Remaster
The biggest rumor doing the rounds at the moment is the return of Super Mario Galaxy 2. In fact, fans were surprised when they found out that it was not included in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars bundle. This time, the remaster might boast:
- Textures and graphics of higher quality
- Smooth 60 FPS performance
- New levels or added content are likely
I remember I spent hours playing Galaxy 1, and if Galaxy 2 comes with upgrades, I’d certainly buy it over again.
New Super Mario Bros. Collection
Another big rumor: a New Super Mario Bros. collection, harnessing the DS and Wii games. This would definitely see millions of players who first experienced these games in their childhood come back to the fold. Given how many millions these games have sold, a release wouldn’t be that surprising for Nintendo.
Return of Super Mario All-Stars
It’s being said that Super Mario All-Stars would probably return with Switch 2 as well, rounding up all three of Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros., with performance optimizations. This would be a good collection that both new and old fans would enjoy.
Will Mario 35 Ever Come Back?
Some players, including me, hope that Mario 35 will return- the online battle mode in which dozens of players attempt to compete until one is left as Mario himself. The first go-around was rather short-lived, but with a bit of tinkering, it could easily find its way into Nintendo’s online services as a permanent feature.
A Brand-New 3D Mario Game for Switch 2
The most thrilling part would be the new 3D Mario, specifically designed for the features of Switch 2. Historically, Nintendo has released one major 3D Mario for every console generation; thus, it would be timely to make such an announcement in September 2025. The possible time of launch would be 2026, as Switch 2 turns one year old.
How Donkey Kong Bonanza Proves Switch 2 Is Strong
Demand for Switch-2 may be declining, but sales speak a completely different language. Amazon’s best-selling new releases have had Donkey Kong Bonanza at the top of the charts since the time Nintendo brought consoles and games back on the market.
Nintendo has kept more players happy with so many hits because it can supply stock without creating the false scarcity that attracts scalpers and certainly helps games to reach a broader audience faster. Donkey Kong Bonanza’s stellar performance states that there are still huge titles coming away from Mario and Zelda, and thus provide the health of a game library for Switch 2 in its early days.
September Might Be Huge for Nintendo

- Nostalgic re-releases, possible new games
In that case, then, September 2025 could just be one of the biggest, most monumental months for Nintendo in years. Personally, I am hoping for remastering Galaxy 2, a new entry in the 3D Mario series, and, hopefully, a surprise online mode akin to Mario 35.
Mario has spent four decades in gaming history. It will be interesting to see whether Nintendo is trying to focus on nostalgia, moving forward with new ideas, or making the two come together this time.
