Paradigm Island Overview
Paradigm Island is not the typical action RPG. Instead, it combines storytelling, choices, and dice mechanics into an experience that is all about the player. The story starts with Mike, a baby, when a mercenary team rescued him and raised him as one of their own. Seventeen years later, he is ready for his first mission. But soon enough, nothing goes as planned. From a normal job, he finds himself facing tasks where right and wrong are never clearly defined.
Mostly, I loved the freedom given by the game. You have the choice to decide how Mike reacts to the given predicament. There are times throughout the adventure when he might have chosen the calm way, while at other times, he might fight or just roll some dice to see if luck works. It reminded me of the good old days when I used to run tabletop RPG sessions with my friends. Every choice made in this game feels relevant.
But beyond being simply a fighter, Mike can be customized with a varied number of skills. You could make him brilliantly smart or tough, or give him abilities to connect with the spirit world. I liked this serious business, as it made quite a difference each time you played through. It does not make you go forward in one direction, but gives you the sense of being the one who shapes the character.
The inhabitants of Paradigm Island are also very interesting. Some will earn your respect if you behave honestly, while others might very well be deceived by lies and tricks. The choice of whether to earn their trust or manipulate them rests squarely in your hands. One particular instance I remember was where I lied to a character just to see how it would turn out. The reactive way that particular choice evolved in the story wound up surprising me; it made me aware that even the tiniest choices matter after all.
Every action plants a mark. Even the smallest of decisions sends ripples across the land and turns around how characters treat you later. There were times I actually paused in making decisions behind knowing that they just might flip back later in ways I never expected. This is basically what makes Paradigm Island so good; it truly feels like your own personal story rather than just some story being fed to you.
