Dracula: End of Days is not a typical zombie survival game. The world is a frozen nightmare wasteland. Zombies are out in every corner, and in between them is Henry Tarnaki, who was a very quiet painter; he has now become victimized by a mutated bat and is endowed with vampire powers.

I have played this game for just one session, but for me, it appears quite unlike any survival horror title I have played. The emotional component of the narrative strikes home. Henry does not only fight monsters; he fights himself every time he takes blood to survive. You feel heavy pressure because every choice slowly consumes his humanity.

His daughter Rose is what keeps him alive. Only eight years old, she is bright, mischievous, and a better skier than most adults. Yet, in a world filled with zombies and rumors of betrayal, she brightens still. To experience this is to experience much of the story, especially the struggles of Henry as he contends with his curse.

Every survival horror game must have that element of betrayal. Luca Newman, the man they would have once trusted, turns out to be one of the biggest threats. Rose saved him then but sold them out to Anderson Hill, the merciless leader of a scavenger gang. And everything gets worse when he turns into the Zombie King, plunging Henry into an even darker fight.

Anderson Hill is, without a doubt, another villain to be remembered within the game. Former soldier now directing a violent gang of killers, thieves, and controllers of survivors, he is as much terrifically dangerous as these virtual undead. People in this world would kill as gruesomely as any monster, hence facing their gang is sometimes scarier than facing zombies.

The game combines horror with emotional stories. It has nothing to do with killing zombies or running away from vampires. It’s just wondering and giving you a sense of what survival means. How much can you go to protect the only family you have left? That is the core of the power that makes Dracula: End of Days different from any other survival game I have played.

If survival horror games with vampires, zombies, emotional storylines, and a heartfelt father-daughter angle fascinate players, then this game becomes close to home and stays with them for a long time.
