I’ve been playing Herdling the other day, and man, that is unlike most adventure games I’ve played before. The game is from Okomotive, who made the FAR games, and was published by Panic, who brought in Firewatch. That’s already got me thinking since both studios are known for simple yet emotional games.
My Initial Experience with Herding
The first thing I noticed when booting into the game was the stillness. It felt just silent and calm-no long lines of dialogue or complicated menus-just me and the herd of talking creatures termed Calicorns. At first, I didn’t know how much I’d start to get attached to them-but after leading them through some tough terrains, I really started to care about them. It kind of gave me that same feel I had for the first time when I shared with people FAR: Lone Sails-where the journey mattered more than the destination.
What the Game entails
In Herdling, your major activity is simply directing and protecting what is meant to be a big mob of Calicorns. You would pass through all sorts of areas-thick, foggy forests, majestic snowy cliffs, and creaky old valleys that give a feel of being lost. Some parts even reminded me of my own trip up to the mountain, where the air felt sharp and fresh. There are small, easy puzzles along the way, but not to be termed in any way difficult. The main action is keeping the herd safe while climbing to the top of the mountain.
Sometimes, it feels all peaceful until you’re suddenly confronted with stampede sequences, where the herd runs together. Those moments give me that rush of adrenaline, almost like when I used to slide down the steep hill while I was a kid.
The narrative unfolds without words, which I liked. It forces you to focus on the journey itself and the bond between you and the creatures. It’s not about action or fighting; it’s more about survival, trust, and companionship.

Why You Should Try It
For people who liked playing Firewatch or FAR: Changing Tides, Herdling should feel different. It’s not the fast combat; it is more about the atmosphere, the calm journey, and the small things out there in the world. Personally, I got very relaxed playing it. One of those games you sit down with in the late evenings, when there’s some deep meaning you want to squint after. You may also be interested in: Discounty Free Download for Windows PC
