You join a crew in The Complex. You get into unexplored territories within the complex itself. And then, it isn’t what it was meant to be. You suddenly wake up, alone, disoriented, and in a very confusing maze of endless hallways. Silence, empty rooms, and the illusion of being watched upon constitute that heaviness that grows as you go deeper into it.
When I played it the first time, I felt the same panic as the character. I walked and walked around in circles, thinking I was close to the exit, only to find myself back in the same yellow hallway. It’s that feeling of being trapped that makes the game hit so hard.
The Experience
The Complex Expedition is a psychological horror game inspired by the Backrooms myth. Watching it through a VHS camera gives it an old-school, creepy feel. The game focuses on exploration and gradual tension, as opposed to quick scares.
Every run is different from the last, thanks to multiple endings and new entry points. Sometimes you step into a hallway that feels familiar, and sometimes you end up in a place you swear you have never seen before. That element of surprise makes it thrilling.
What the game promises to offer includes:
- One of the most terrifying horror games inspired by Backrooms.
- A mysterious world in which you never feel protected, even for a moment.
- Hidden lifeforms that you may come across while exploring.
From my actual play sessions, this effect, comparable to VHS, made me feel really queasy, almost as if I were watching a really scrappy lost tape.
