An Overview of The Dead Await

The Dead Await is a zombie survival RPG incorporating card-fighting mechanics with world travel. The world is nothing but dead; cities are burnt to ashes, highways are wrecked, and zombies are walking around like they own it.

You play as the head of a caravan that keeps traversing the wasteland in search of food for the people, while trying to disentangle the mystery of the real reason for the apocalypse. And, honestly, zombies are not much fun to deal with, but the remaining survivors oftentimes seem more dangerous.

Travel also means scavenging food, fuel, water, and equipment from abandoned towns. You’ll encounter new groups of surviving people, and not everyone can be trusted. Your dream becomes a nightmare when you realize the survival of the body is not alone in the game; you also have to maintain the sanity of your group members. The hunger, stress, paranoia, and injuries eat at everybody all the time, and the real struggle is to keep moving forward.

From my end, I have played games in which managing resources was annoying, but the tension in The Dead Await is good. There had been runs wherein I was almost out of fuel, and just as I thought it was safe to pop the champagne, one of my crew was on the verge of losing it due to stress. That was when the epiphany struck: the real fight is as much against fear as it is against zombies.

Character Customization and Combat

You can build your survivor in different ways. Maybe you prefer someone who talks their way out of fights or one combatant who just smashes through zombies. Fighting is conducted via a card system; players will constantly work on tweaking their deck and strategizing with their squad. With time, as you travel, your group is able to transform into seasoned, weathered survivors. Weapons, mods, and upgrades are what keep the fight interesting, with even being able to turn simple gear into devastating zombie-slaying machines.

Caravan Upgrades

Your caravan is a base on wheels. It is not just a vehicle; it is the only reason why you continue. You can spend these upgrades on storage, workbenches, or survival equipment. Changing tires, engines, or suspension lets you reach harder areas. It is here where you craft weapons, cook food for small boosts, and keep your people alive. Oh yes, being able to hit a zombie with an old favorite: the baseball bat with rusty nails.

Why Play The Dead Await?

What I like most is that it isn’t only about surviving day by day; in fact, it makes one feel like trying really hard to rebuild something from the ashes. Every such small triumph matters so much out there, like the day you finally collected enough supplies for the next journey.
