BOULDER DASH 40th Anniversary Collection – A Brief Overview
Playing BOULDER DASH 40th Anniversary feels almost like stepping into a time machine. I remember back in the day when I enjoyed the original, and this version just brings that classic diamond-hunting charm into the present with a nice sprinkle of enhancements.
You guide Rockford through the caves, digging, trying not to get squashed by falling boulders or into the path of enemies who will ruin your day. Get enough diamonds, get out before anything else becomes mischief. That simple. But of course, speed isn’t the only thing; you have to think to make it through.
One of the best things about the edition is the amount of content. There are 180 completely new levels and 60 remastered classics from the original trilogy. You also get 6 new worlds, which even include some fan-made levels from long-time Boulder Dash players. New mechanics include walls that grow up, acid rocks, and surprise eggs, which can completely change the way you play.
I loved the level editor. After finishing the main levels, players can go create their own caves or play through hundreds of community-created levels. This keeps things fresh for a long time.
Visually, I expected less. The soundtrack is composed by a legend in gaming music, Chris Huelsbeck. Plus, the choice of three heroes, each inspired by the original characters, gives it a nice custom touch.
The BOULDER DASH experience is not simply a remake of old times. It’s truly the complete BOULDER DASH® experience. Anyone interested in retro gaming, puzzle solving, or simply finding out what made this game a classic in 1984 would love this anniversary edition. Rockford is back and feels just right.
