I was just hanging out with friends on a yacht when everything went wrong. The yacht sank, and we were marooned on this gigantic, mysterious island. Panic engulfed me for the first few seconds, and after that, survival instincts kicked in.

Survival is simply one of the aspects of Island Notes. Sure, you have to manage your food, water, and shelter, but the scope goes beyond that. You can farm, fish, craft, and even tame pets. And to my surprise, I ended up caring about the people around me, too, not just myself. The NPCs offer a relationship-building system; they talk and act, while the voice line acting makes them feel alive in the moment.

The island is vast. There are caves, cliffs, ruins, and corners hidden from the sight of men, and each and every object in sight has a purpose. You could probably collect just about everything, and each item has its value. I enjoyed cliff hiking and secret-spot searching, and it truly makes one feel like a profound survivor.

These NPCs are not merely in one spot waiting for you. They eat, sleep, gather resources, and even fight alongside you. Some even check on your health or mood. As your friendship grows, you get special outfits and see their personalities expressed. It just felt super-natural and fun.

Of course, everything you would want from a survivor title is packed in. You build bases, farm crops, hatch and raise pets, and make weapons and armor. The beasts of the lands behave in entirely different ways, such that combat cannot just consist of swinging a stick around. You have to think about the terrain, set up your attack, and sometimes think on your feet if a creature sees you from a cliff or a cave.

The weapons themselves vary greatly-you can use axes, bows, spears, crossbows, and guns. Some tools serve purposes other than fighting, like shovels, sickles, and bamboo tubes, which I found incredibly useful in gathering or crafting. The game is truly open-ended. Your choice to wander through forests, scale cliffs, or dive underwater to explore sunken ruins.
