That feeling of nostalgia hit hard when I first played Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE Plus over my PC. Really, it brought back memories of Danganronpa days, but with a darker twist. This game doesn’t offer puzzles alone; it throws one into a city where rains never cease and secrets lie buried all around.
It’s a vast city governed by a megacorporation. It seems like every nook and corner has something shadowy going on. One becomes Yuma, a trainee detective with Shinigami by his side. Together, they dig through the mysteries of Kanai Ward with many master detectives who all have their special skills.
Gameplay Overview
Rather than taking you on a trip to the Mystery Labyrinth, where things get wild, RAIN CODE Plus is unlike most normal adventure games that take you from here to there, real investigations.
Investigation: You control Yuma, walk around the city, talk to locals, and collect clues called “Solution Keys.” Reminded me much of the old detective games in which every tiny detail mattered.
Forensic Forte: Each detective you meet will have what I call superpowers, be it Postcognition (seeing the past) or Disguise. These powers make solving the cases fun because you come across stuff you wouldn’t find otherwise.
Mystery Labyrinth: When you have gathered enough clues, you enter a twisted maze teeming with traps and gimmicks. Personally, this section kept me glued, as you really have to dodge and, at the same time, use the clues wisely.
Reasoning Death Match: This is the action-packed area. Appears to be a Mystery Phantom that tries to block you from knowing the truth, while you defend yourself with the Solution Blade, a combination of logic with quick action gameplay.
Extra Content: There is also some Memory Shard hidden, which tells secret cutscenes about Yuma and the other detectives. In addition to this, there are side stories that get you to help people around the city, which is another reason to explore.
My Experience Playing
Initially, when I stepped foot into the Mystery Labyrinth, I really found it confusing, but then after a couple of minutes, I started to enjoy the flow. It reminded me of collecting clues, then cutting through the Phantom with the Solution Blade, which gave me the same rush as playing any over-the-top familiar action game.
And those trivial side stories were really nice. Helped some random NPC, and I ended up getting extra backstory about the world, which made Kanai Ward feel alive.
