City Defense Z sort of falls in the survival genre, but with strategy and a hint of puzzle mixed into it. It usually splits time between day and night. During the day, the work focuses on building and expanding your base, gathering resources, and defending it. On the other hand, at night, you get to see how everything used during the day pays off when zombies come crashing into your settlement.

The first time I played, I thought I was ready with no less than the walls built, some soldiers, and traps. Yet, by night, everything was in ruins as everything was blasted even faster than I expected. This lesson endorsed that every action in the game is crucial.

Anything that increases the power of one’s base can be made or bought in broad daylight: factories to serve as workhorses, ammo factories to arm troops, labs to do research, and houses to expand the population. The special phenomenon here is the idea of merging. Place three together, that is, three of the same building (or possibly troop), into an advanced building. I liked this very much because it meant more accuracy in placement rather than the indiscriminate raising of structures.

During zombie invasions at night, one has to be skilled in their operations. Airstrikes, landmines at choke points, and spreading units all have a share in pulling you back from the brink of elimination. I left some gaping holes in planning my warfare, like lining up units at once and watching for my base to implode.

City Defense Z is all about defending without exception, with the risk of becoming better the more days you laboriously survive. This shifting of powers toward better houses could indeed feel very nice and has embedded the thought that future plans will still be made accordingly to streamline house construction. The approach from the very start to the end was a lesson in maintaining balance between army buildup and resource management.

The NPCs in the game come in with their fully introduced personalities, so the decisions one makes on approach play a role and also affect the game differently. There are twelve trees for research that have more than 50 serious upgrades, plus a few minor nodes that round to over 100 unique upgrades. It always feels different doing another try since you are unlocking new playstyles in every run.

It was a very pleasant motivation to look for high scores. I’m one who is never inclined to obtain scores, but attaining the milestone marked put a smile on my face.

I’ve had plenty of experience with various zombie-survival games, but most involve shooting and looting. With City Defense Z, the game is all about forethought; it has a strong element of thinking for itself. Blending strategy with survival, it’s like solving a puzzle numerous times through each and every mechanism of merging breakdown.

What impressed me the most was that each single mistake one makes tends to impart some lessons. Increase the number of soldiers at the cost of starvation, and you’ll undoubtedly encounter starvation. Over-focus on factories and ignore defenses, and you get smashed by zombies. There’s an uncanny balance creating a magnetic force that pulls gamers further into this title.

Merge smartly. Don’t just throw buildings anywhere. Save space and combine for stronger upgrades.

Balance resources. Always keep an eye on all five resources. Running out of one can ruin your progress.

Use traps wisely. Landmines and turrets work best in choke points where zombies group up.

Upgrade research. Unlocking new tech early can save you in later waves.
