An Overview of Isles & Tiles
In Isles & Tiles, from the ocean, you wade in and slowly convert land to your little slice of paradise. A card-based resource and colony builder, where every action you perform influences the way your island grows. The idea is pretty simple: you use your deck to place tiles, manage resources, and keep your citizens happy, although the actual play usually turns out differently with every game.
When I started, it felt basic, with hardly a thing to work with. Gradually, I would build a hand and bring new cards in events, and modifiers that each time made the game feel fresh in its own right. Sometimes I’d be creating coastlines, planting forests for wood, or raising mountains just to gain access to some stone. The variability of my islands kept me back for a longer time than I thought.
At first, the ambiance is soothing; there are only a handful of settlers and equally few demands. As time progresses through the game, things tend to complicate. Settlers are demanding more with every card played; they attribute a certain flow to the game. There were times when I focused a lot on raising my population, other times I flat-out ignored their needs and just went bonkers creating a weird-looking island for my own amusement. The game does allow that personal choice, and that level of freedom greatly enhanced my enjoyment.
Some rare and legendary level cards become game changers. One playthrough in particular, I remember drawing a really potent artifact, and it totally rocked the game. Do you keep those magical objects to yourself, or do you give them to the people? These choices are not just cosmetic; they really impact how the whole island itself develops.
If you have played games like Carcassonne, Dorfromantik, or Catan, Isles & Tiles shares the same tile-placement feeling. But here, you also have deck-building and much more strategy. The best bit is the soundtrack: this Breton folk-inspired music makes the game feel chilling despite the sweat of thinking about placing your next tile.
