Adventure of Samsara is a two-dimensional slasher that feels nothing more than 2600-style, similar to Atari, but with its own personal touch and deeper storytelling. If there is more to describe, then it is a Metroidvania-type game where you go on exploring further, opening paths, and attaching pieces of the world more gradually.
The art style is pixel art that looks intentionally simple yet polished, drawing you into the mysterious atmosphere of the world. The mighty story speaks of the Champion trying to set balance back by re-establishing the Nexus fortress that links different dimensions. It involves death, rebirth, and memory, so it is beyond simple hack-and-slash mode.
The interconnectivity between stages was the first impression I had from my very first attempt at the game. I enjoyed the sensation of being able to go back and open shortcuts, obtaining powers that unexpectedly alter the way one sees previous locations. Bosses are hard, yet fair, with all new skills unlocking a sense of satisfaction.
For me, the cherry on top was in the form of subtleties that reminded me of the very first adventure released on Atari. Retro gamers would, of course, enjoy spotting those minor nods. It isn’t exactly a remake or a sequel; rather, it serves as an entirely novel creation that pays homage to the forefathers of the classic exploration genre.

Firing up Adventure of Samsara transported me back years to the errant age of my family PC, in the macho style of old, simple yet challenging games, where, over and over, you would retry until you learned the boss pattern. Stuck on a single level for hours in one dreamlike biome, finally unlocking that hidden ability felt like the quintessential “aha” moment, making this game incredibly addictive.
