When evening descends in Kentucky, it becomes a rival world. Birds become silent, and frogs begin croaking, while the insects join them, creating a chorus. Those familiar roads suddenly turn unrecognizable, and if you are already lost, you might just end up wandering an elusive highway that runs deep through the hidden caves.

Down this eerie road, you will encounter many unusual characters. At first glance, they appear eccentric. However, they become old friend over time. An elderly truck driver attempting to complete the final leg of his last delivery to a closing antique store; a young girl with a crew of hanging ghosts that traipses to fix old TVs that don’t work anymore; then, there’s the kid who travels with a feathered friend, an eagle that weighs more and feels more like family. You will also get to meet the diverse robot musicians, unsuspecting workers stuck in a shadowy grip of a power company, and small communities trying to survive against its control.

Kentucky Route Zero is an adventure game rolled out in five acts. It is a blend of magical realism and a pretty personal dreamlike story. The music is enough to catch someone’s attention; electronic sounds joined with hymns and bluegrass songs recorded by The Bedquilt Ramblers.

More of what we see in theater, film, and electronic art than in normal video games. That’s why the journey feels more like watching a play or indie film, but you’re still part of the story. Such themes are heavy debts that people cannot settle, futures that are broken, and the lengths to which people will still go in an attempt, however futile, to connect in this sometimes difficult world.

It was playing late at night, headphones on, more like an experience than even playing the game. Some scenes ended, and I found myself sitting there silently for a moment while pondering the characters and lives inside them. It is slow-paced but in such a way that you enjoy every moment.
