The Dark Queen of Mortholme is a game that I recently gave a try. To be completely honest, it felt very different from any indie games I would doodle around with since the old days. A short pixel-arty action game sees you stepping into the shoes of the Queen herself. Unlike in most games where you are a Hero, here you simply stand as the Boss, the oppressor between a Hero and the game ending. That one twist made me all the more curious to see it through in one sitting.
The ambiance feels dark, but in a fun way. Because not once does the Hero get to fight you; he keeps resurrecting again and again. It was a tension that felt near-to-everlasting, which is not common in every such small game.
Gameplay Experience
In the Dark Queen of Mortholme PC game, you are fighting the Hero with the Queen’s powers. The combat is simple yet fulfilling; strike, block, and use your various attacks to keep that Hero at bay. Personally, I really appreciated that the screen didn’t move much. It was fixed, thus creating a very focused and tense battle.
The dialogue surprised me most; the story changes depending on your choices. At times, you sympathize with the Hero; at other times, you’re wishing for eventual global domination as the Queen. By the time I got a different ending in my second playthrough, I was considering replaying just to see the other endings.

- Multiple Endings: Different dialogue paths give you unique endings.
- Pixel Art Style: Classic design that feels old-school but still modern.
- Music and Atmosphere: The soundtrack pulls you into the Queen’s world.
- Steam Achievements: Unlock rewards while defeating the Hero.
- Short and Engaging: A game designed to finish in one session.
My Thoughts
The replay value really made The Dark Queen of Mortholme shine for me. The multiple endings kept my interest running even though the game wasn’t long. I liked how the battles felt personal; I was truly standing between the Hero and his happy ending.
If you like indie games quick enough to be called a quickie and dark enough to stick for a while, then it is worth the download. It truly reminded me of games I played on my ancient PC back in the day; those ones that did not need to worry about graphics yet bombarded you with storyline and memories.
