A picnic table in one of the local parks in Bremen shows signs of damage. It was this unfortunate incident that mounted the greatest online conflict the town has yet seen. An uncomplicated post on Facebook laid blame on a host of wayward teens, and before long, the lines were drawn.

Sonja Rae posted in the Bremen Citizen group. She told parents to ask their young teens who wrecked the table. She said she saw some heavier boys with a basketball there after dark and figured they did it. She called them hoodlums and heathens and said if parents can’t go with their kids, they should keep them home.
But the comments came down hard and fast. Most people thought she passed judgment too quickly, without sufficient proof. One lady asked, “Did that even cross your mind, that maybe the table was already broken when the boys got there?” Another asked if she actually saw them break it, or did she just see them chillin’ at a broken table. She added that even if they did it nobody has the right to talk down to a child like that.
Local residents especially protested that she appeared to blame the boys simply because they are bigger. One wrote that it takes real strength to bend metal like that and asked whether she was blaming a kid just because he was heavy.

Quite a few people commented that the table itself is cheap or poorly made. Others posted pictures of other town tables bent in the same way. Some said these tables have looked like this for months.
I live two streets over from that park. My kids play there almost every evening. I have seen those same saggy tables for at least a year. The city keeps putting in the same cheap ones, and they buckle in the first really hot summer. Honestly, the whole thing felt familiar. Years ago, I posted about some graffiti on the playground and was called every name in the book for assuming it was the older kids hanging out. Lesson learned. Stuff breaks. Kids get blamed first.
Of course, a few people agreed that vandalism happens and kids need more supervision. One wrote that, really, nobody cares anymore, and because of that, everything remains broken, but even they said that the name-calling made it worse.

Then the thread turned funny. Someone in the comments called her the bench police. Another one asked why she was watching heavy children in a park after dark. Memes started flying around. Other people joked that the table finally gave up on living in Bremen. A couple accused her of bending it herself and taking the pictures afterwards.
One comment that I liked a lot said that at least the kids were at the park shooting hoops instead of out causing real trouble. It ended with fix it yourself if it bothers you that much.
Nobody knows for sure if those boys broke the picnic table purposely or by accident, or not at all. The table is still there, bent the same way. But in comparison, the online argument is ten times bigger than the damage really was. Small towns, right? One picture and everyone has an opinion.
