The Citadel has fallen, the final stronghold of humanity against the Apocalypse. Now, the humans are under the rule of the dreaded Trumpeters of the Apocalypse, who lead the forces of destruction. The Martyr you play as is the last hope of the Seven Angels who guard mankind. Following a strange signal, your journey to slay the Trumpeters and bring to light the truths buried under the ruins of the Citadel begins.
My first experience with Beyond Citadel, to be honest, was an incredibly intense one. The combination of the old-school FPS feel with anime graphics created this unique nostalgia-freshness.
Beyond Citadel is a single-player first-person shooter that borrows heavily from old-school 90’s shooters. The 2.5D anime art style mixed with hyper-realistic gunplay creates havoc in every combat.
Realistic Weaponry and Gunplay
The guns on Beyond Citadel are not for show. Anything from the old black powder weapons to the more modern energy weapons is at your disposal. Each weapon feels different, and you have to adapt to the way it handles, forcing you to switch up your playing style. Weapons can degrade with use over time, and every now and again, they jam, throwing a curveball into the heat of battle.
Challenging Locations and Enemies
In level design, there is much variety. You traverse through hand-crafted maps indoors and outdoors, acquiring new skills along the way. The enemies are daunting and match the diversity in level design. Everything from mediocre fodders to heavy-duty armored vehicles to monstrous nightmare creatures is at your disposal to battle. I can never forget one level where I thought myself to be in a safe zone, only for a heavy armored machine to come crashing in, forcing me to rethink my entire strategy.
Immersive World and Memorable Characters
Beyond Citadel has a dark and atmospheric world. In it, you are never really alone. Allies accompany you in your fight against the Apocalypse. Destruction effects are intense, making the post-apocalyptic world feel very alive and very dangerous. The characters’ uniqueness, in turn, triggers a deep bond with the player, making the story more interesting compared to your typical FPS.
