Recently, I played BROK the InvestiGator, and honestly, this game feels different from what you normally come across. There’s action and puzzles, but it also features a proper story-based investigation into all that. This is a futuristic cyberpunk-style world, but instead of humans, animals take the role of characters. The rich live under a dome that keeps them alive from the dirty air outside, while the less fortunate really struggle to survive on the streets.
The main star is Brok, a private detective who used to be a boxer. He lives with Graff, the son of his now-deceased wife. Brok never really understood what happened in his wife’s accident, but as the game moves forward, new events reveal that her death may not have been what it looked like. Playing through it, I really felt that Brok had an emotional journey, thinking about survival, corruption, and destiny when it doesn’t feel fair.
What I liked about this game is that it gives you a choice, whether using your ingenuity to solve puzzles or fighting with enemies head-on. It even has RPG elements as well, where you level up to beat stronger foes and bosses. Personally, depending on my mood, I found myself switching between solving to adventure, and fighting.
Here are some of the things that stood out to me:
A story-driven experience that reminded me of old 80s and 90s cartoon shows I grew up watching.
It is a cool mixture of point and click adventure with beat’em up action and RPG mechanics.
Puzzles that can be solved in multiple ways, either with logic or by brute force.
Choices that change how the story unfolds and even the ending.
Easy mode for those who just want to focus on the story (you can skip fights if you want).
Over 15 hours of gameplay on your first run, with different endings to unlock.
Fully voice-acted with more than 23,000 lines of dialogue.
Two playable characters that you can switch between anytime.
In-game hint system if you get stuck.
When I first tried the game, I expected this long, but I ended up almost spending an entire weekend on my first playthrough. The story was so engaging that it encouraged me to see the different outcomes.
