Former Clarendon County softball player Jessie Way has passed away at 31 due to injuries from a car accident. Alcolu is where Jessie came from in Alcolu, South Carolina, and everyone knew her in this locality. The news really hit me when I heard it. I have never met her, but the way people talked about her showed how much she meant to everyone around her.
She was a popular student of the class of 2013, well known for many sports and invariably described as someone who brought energy and support to the games. She was an active figure in school sporting events and local happenings even after graduation, so of course, people from Clarendon County knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Orry Hodge, and their three children. Her mother, Danette, had shared a photo of herself and Tray Way while speaking about her daughter. Funeral details will be made public by Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.
After she passed away, the whole town shared memories and feelings. One friend, Mary Mayson, said she could not find any words to express the desolate feeling and that meet-ups with friends would never feel the same. She requested everyone to pray for Jessie’s family and friends.
Another classmate, Chris Paack Jr., wrote a heartwrenching prayer for the family. After hearing the sad news, he felt heavy-hearted. He asked people to remember her children and her entire family in their prayers and hoped they would find some comfort.
Colby McLeod reminded that anyone who knew Jessie loved her. This world was left too early by Jessie, but it will live on in her spirit through her children. The reading of his words made it apparent how much she meant to these people who grew up with her.
Jessica Rogers, a member of the Class of 2013, stated that losing one of their classmates felt like a big blow. It implied that their class had always been quite closely knit and that, within such a short time, this loss had brought back many memories.
Melissa Braxton spoke of Jessie as both a mother and an individual. She beseeched everyone to pray for Jessie’s children, her mother, Danette, her father, Tray, and her husband, Orry. She called Jessie a kind-hearted person who cared for others’ well-being.
Many people left short messages of comfort and support. An individual named McGee said, ‘It really shook people all across Clarendon and even beyond.’ Others, like Honey Dawn Chapman and Angie McLeod Berberich, offered prayers and said they were available whenever the family needed anything. PattyJaye Garrett Patterson and Christie Bobby Beatson also sent their messages of condolence.
Immediately, the very first fund drive was arranged for the family. Neighbors and past teammates planned meals, arranged babysitting, and performed tiny acts of kindness across several areas to support the family during this time. This part moved me in that it showed how a community can come together in grief after losing one of their loved ones.
Remembering the little things she did for her people: She always made time for other people and helped whenever possible. Many entries talked about her kindness and the way she made her everyday moments feel special.
Her family has requested privacy while making funeral arrangements. At this time, the community focuses on supporting her three kids and keeping her memory alive. Jessie might no longer be with us, but her life seems to have had a substantial impact on many around her.
