Fresh Tracks is not your typical action game, as it revolves completely around music, and I found that pretty cool when I played it for the first time. Every hit, every dodge, and even leveling up feels timed to the beat of the soundtrack. It’s like the game world breathes with the music, and you just flow with it.

A mythic story based on Norse human mythology, where you meet the Mythic gods who will, through both music and storytelling, come alive. Surprise was the voice acting: With a cast that includes Peter Stormare and Michael Antonakos, some of the cutscenes feel a little more real, making me feel like I’m watching a show rather than skipping through dialogue.

Another thing I liked so much was the roguelite system. Every run is different, and even failing has not deterred me from wanting to make another attempt. It got more rewarding unlocking upgrades, and I kept adjusting my strategy to do better next time.

To be fair, the music is what makes this game really shine. 28 different tracks are put to very different kinds of music and then changed up depending on what you’re doing. At first, I thought it was just background music, but after a couple of hours, I could see how much it shapes the experience. The game pulls you into a rhythm and keeps you hooked, though unknowingly.

Downloading as I did, I wasn’t at all sure of enjoying a rhythm-action game. However, I ended up spending hours in it. The whole fighting-meets-music idea is something new and refreshing. If you like roguelite games or even if you just love music-driven gameplay, then this game is surely worth checking out.
