Georgia soccer coach Shelly Hoddeson passed away on December 1, 2025. The news felt heavy because she was loved by many in the Georgia soccer community and beyond. Although the exact cause of her passing has not been shared, a message from Tim Tuveson revealed how much she had been hurting in silence. He mentioned that she endured a lot of pain but still tried to make others feel comfortable. This made me reflect on how some individuals conceal their suffering to avoid worrying those around them. I have witnessed this in my own family, so it struck a chord with me.
The Georgia soccer community is mourning her loss. Her family, players, and many friends remember her fondly. Shelly was known as both a strong player and a committed coach. She lived in Atlanta, Georgia, and dedicated her life to two things she loved deeply: soccer and nature.
She ran her own business, SEC Gardens, and also worked as a Property Care Manager at Plants Creative Landscapes. She enjoyed working outdoors and caring for plants. This suited her calm demeanor, as people have said about her.
For her education, she attended Marist School and later studied Psychology at the University of Georgia. Before starting her business, she was already well-known in soccer. She played for the GSA 85 team and helped them win the National Championship in 2001. It was the first time a girls’ team from Georgia achieved that milestone under Coach Ted Colburn. After that, she played college soccer for both the University of South Carolina and the University of Georgia.
She also loved coaching. Many kids and families recognized her because she worked with NASATOPHAT families and helped young players learn the game. People say she genuinely cared about her players and guided them well. When someone like that passes away, it leaves a significant impact.
Friends and teammates shared many memories of her. They spoke of her kindness, how she always uplifted others, and how she made soccer enjoyable and meaningful. Her former wife, Angela Gibson, wrote a heartfelt message. She expressed their shared desire for the best for Naomi and promised that Shelly would always be part of their daughter’s life. She even mentioned a sweet moment when Naomi’s toy appeared in a Georgia Bulldog outfit. That message moved many people.
A last rites ritual will be held on December 9, 2025, at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Johns Creek, Georgia. The Rosary will begin at 10 AM in the chapel, followed by the Funeral Mass at 11 AM in the main church. A reception will take place afterward.
I never met her in person, but I have played sports and understand how one great coach can change your outlook. Learning about her made me recall my own coach from school, who always motivated me positively. Coaches like that leave a lasting impression.
