So here’s the deal. You’re lost in this huge, creepy forest, and the only way to not wander around forever is to have your buddy shoot flares to guide you. Sounds easy? Believe me, it’s anything but.

The forest is tough. Freezing cold, dark, and full of Wendigos hunting you down. Each move feels monumental. Your torch? That’s everything. Fire is the very thing that keeps you alive. It warms you, scares off the Wendigos, and lights your path. But alas, it’s not eternal. If your torch goes out, then you have to get matches quickly to rekindle the fire, or else death is imminent. There was this one time I thought I could just hold on for a while without a campfire… what a huge mistake that turned out to be! The Wendigo was too close, and it was back to square one for me.

Campfires are a must. They give you little havens to warm up, rekindle the torch, and prepare for the next stretch. After that, ya gotta be quiet. Too much noise, and the Wendigo will hear you. I learned that the hard way, as whispering or even breathing loudly could give my position away.

After some time, being out in the cold causes the character to collapse. There are no saves and no checkpoints. Mess up, and it’s over. Between fifteen minutes and an hour, depending on how much you screw up. And for the spooky bit: the game uses your microphone. Sounds from real life get you killed. That totally gave me the creeps the first time around. Expect your heart to start pumping during a jump scare because you thought you would be safe.
