Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days does include the often popular exploding of zombies, but it leans toward survival in a shattered city where every choice matters.
The game takes players to the scalding heat of Walton City during1980s Texas. An economic crash already grips those city inhabitants before the zombies begin spreading in. You now play the leader of regular people trying to survive.
What struck me first when I tried the game was that it’s about survival; the realism feels very real. You can’t just rush around shooting everything around you. By sneaking, scavenging, and slowly making your way through ruined streets, you have most of the time got to be quieter. If it gets too noisy, the undead will track you very fast; I learned that the hard way when I rushed into a building, grabbed supplies, and ended up trapped because I made too much noise.
Combat is there. But more in desperation than in a heroic way. Everything goes, or whatever can be found or crafted. Some might not fight, but when survival is at stake, people change.
Shelters are lifesavers, where safe houses are established; upgraded ones are even brought to contain your group with food and rest. However, the game never stops reminding you to be on your toes. Every night, zombies attack the barricades, and if they ever break in, one of your team members might not see the following morning. Concerns such as hunger, injuries, and even trauma are as important as someone wielding an axe.
My biggest struggle was decision making: Going outside despite the already weak state of the group just to forage: Do you trust the strangers you meet? Or do you push them away to keep your people safe? There may even be times when someone will have to be left behind. That really makes you think.
Each run feels different. Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days download is thus not just another mindless zombie game; there is perhaps more leadership, survival, and hard decisions involved than the averageness of being a “hero” with a gun. It tests how far you will go when the world around you has completely fallen apart.
