Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has officially been crowned Major League Soccer’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2024 season.
The 37-year-old soccer legend clinched the award in his first full season with Inter Miami, after joining the team from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023.
Messi’s Stellar Season
Messi had an incredible impact on the league, scoring 21 goals in just 22 league matches, with 18 of those as starts. His contributions helped Inter Miami secure the Supporters’ Shield, a significant achievement for the club, though their playoff run was cut short by Atlanta United in November.
Honored by the League
The MVP award, now named the Landon Donovan MVP Award, is voted on by MLS players, club executives, and media. Messi’s win makes him the first Inter Miami player to earn the honor.
“It’s truly an honor to receive this award,” Messi said. “I’m so happy to be here every day in this city, at this club that is growing and evolving.”
MLS commissioner Don Garber added, “Everybody who loves the game is honored to have Messi in this league. Having the best player in the world in MLS is something out of a dream.”
A Legacy in the Making
Messi’s MVP win highlights his continued dominance in soccer, even as he approaches the twilight of his career. He joins a distinguished list of Argentine players who have won the award, including Luciano Acosta (FC Cincinnati, 2023), Christian Gomez (D.C. United, 2006), Guillermo Barros Schelotto (Columbus Crew, 2008), and Diego Valeri (Portland Timbers, 2017). Argentina now holds the second-most MVP awards, just behind U.S. players.
A Career Full of Trophies
This MVP honor is another milestone in Messi’s extraordinary career. The Argentine superstar has previously won:
- 8 Ballon d’Or titles
- 9 La Liga Player of the Season awards
- 16 Argentine Footballer of the Year trophies
‘Diminished Yet Dominant’
Even with injuries and international duties keeping Messi from playing a full 34-match season, his performance remained unmatched. Though he might have lost some of his speed, his tactical understanding and finishing ability are still elite.
His stats not only matched but outshined those of the other MVP finalists, making him the obvious choice for the award.
The Future of MLS
Messi’s influence on MLS goes beyond his on-field success. His presence has elevated the league’s profile globally, inspiring fans and players alike. While Inter Miami couldn’t bring home the championship this year, Messi’s leadership and talent have set the stage for greater achievements ahead.
