Medicus is more than worthy of the spotlight if you are a full-on medieval-themed game enthusiast like me. I had a chance to play the demo for a few hours, and it gave me that comfortable yet slightly uneasy feeling of undertaking something very serious. The game is being developed solo by a developer, so every suggestion and feedback shared by players plays an important role in the game becoming even better. Honestly, I kind of respect that; it feels like we are building the game.

In Medicus, you play as an alchemist medicus in a small medieval town. Your main job is running your potion shop. That means brewing potions, searching for rare ingredients, and helping townsfolk who are always showing up with different problems. It’s not just about mixing herbs, though. You have to manage your shop: Keep shelves filled and ensure that you don’t run out of money!

Every game day feels a little different. There are days when you are perfecting an old recipe; then there are days when you try something new. Grow and expand that poor little infirmary! Hire helpers! And accommodate every odd, random event that the town throws your way! This really made me feel like an active part of the town and not just some random character.

What I liked most was how you can freely experiment with herbs, minerals, and rare finds to create different potions. Then, you can upgrade your workshop, unlock recipes, and carry out research on new ways. I spent a lot of time just messing around with various combinations to see what happens. The pace is rather slow, with the fun coming from the kind of relaxed gaming where one thinks and gradually builds a reputation for being the best medicus or whatever in town.

The art style is 3D isometric, which pretty much bestows that medieval proper charm on the shop. It feels cozy, but not so simple that it bores you to death. I saw a subtle update: a volume slider was added, and the freeze bug running in the background is finally ambushed! Each bit adds up to an ever-smoother experience!
