Never Second in Rome throws you headfirst into the sandals of a Roman centurion serving in Julius Caesar’s legions. Set in a Mediterranean Republic dominating the known world yet teetering on the edge from internal conflicts, you’ll navigate the aftermath of a devastating civil war that still haunts the previous generation. When a new governor arrives in your province, you’re caught in a chain of events that will ultimately shape Rome’s imperial destiny. The game kicks off just before the Gallic War erupts, with you taking command of a century in a freshly raised legion.

Gameplay Critique

The recent shift away from meta-progression has seriously damaged the game’s replay value. The gameplay has become much more rigid – there’s now basically a “correct” approach to everything, which kills almost all replayability. With the core gameplay taking a hit, you’d hope the Choose Your Own Adventure elements would pick up the slack, but they’ve actually gotten worse. Most decision points still boil down to either “Take on an optional harder fight” or “Attempt a skill check for some minor benefit.” Even more disappointing, the events and battles no longer adapt based on your performance, which further guts any reason to play through multiple times.
