Rangers to Scratch Jacob Trouba as Trade or Waivers Decision Looms

The New York Rangers are set to scratch their captain, Jacob Trouba, from Friday night’s game, signaling that his time with the team could soon come to an end. According to league sources, the Rangers are actively exploring trade options or preparing to place Trouba on waivers, marking a significant shake-up for the team.

Trouba’s Future with the Rangers in Question

Trouba, who is currently in the final year of his contract with an $8 million cap hit, has been a key part of the Rangers’ roster since joining the team in 2019. However, general manager Chris Drury has indicated that changes are necessary to adjust the team’s veteran core.

Despite not wanting to leave during the offseason—partly due to his wife Kelly’s medical residency at a New York hospital—Trouba now finds himself on the outs as the Rangers evaluate their options.

Drury reportedly sent a memo to the NHL’s other 31 general managers a few weeks ago, expressing openness to trade offers for both Trouba and veteran forward Chris Kreider. Now, it looks as though the team might take a similar approach to the June trade involving Barclay Goodrow—potentially waiving Trouba so another team can claim him without requiring compensation.

Waivers Could Force Trouba’s Hand

The situation surrounding waivers adds another layer of complexity. If the Rangers place Trouba on waivers, it could pressure the captain to waive his no-trade clause to ensure he has control over his destination. Reports from Pierre LeBrun at The Athletic suggest that the Rangers have multiple trade offers but that they all hinge on Trouba agreeing to waive his no-trade rights.

Victor Mancini, a 22-year-old defenseman, has been called up to fill Trouba’s spot in the lineup. Mancini impressed during training camp and has already logged 10 games this season, showcasing the potential to step into a larger role as the Rangers rework their defensive strategy.

Why Trouba’s Departure Matters

Trouba’s $8 million cap hit has been a significant financial commitment for the Rangers, and removing that would give the team much-needed flexibility to address defensive struggles. New York has struggled defensively, particularly during a rough 1-6-0 skid leading into Friday’s game against the Penguins.

The 30-year-old Trouba signed a seven-year, $8 million-a-year contract after forcing his way out of Winnipeg in 2019. His move to New York was largely driven by a desire to be closer to his wife as she pursued her medical degree. He was named the team’s captain ahead of the 2022-23 season and was widely celebrated as the team’s leader. However, now it seems his time in New York is nearing its end.

The Big Picture

With Trouba’s future uncertain and a potential move on the horizon, the Rangers are hoping these changes will inject much-needed defensive strength into the team. While his leadership was once a cornerstone of the team’s success, New York is ready to pivot as they aim to turn their fortunes around this season.

Whether through a trade, waivers, or a fresh opportunity elsewhere, it seems Jacob Trouba’s days as a Ranger are coming to a close.
