As the game begins, you are thrown into a death-dealing world where the ground is out to kill you with lava pits, acid pools, and vending machines that somehow dispense rocket launchers with your drink. The levels aren’t just living backgrounds; they serve as an active threat you can use against your enemies.

I was stuck playing the first episode for hours. It has ten levels, and every single one is designed to outsmart the player into making mistakes. The world is built around bizarre Shoomerian mythology; it honestly gives you a kind of good unease atmosphere.

You control this bearded fellow whose mind is lost in complete chaos. Fighting waves of weird monsters, struggling to keep your sanity. There were definitely some moments in which I felt like I was getting sucked into that same chaos while playing, particularly during those levels where enemies attacked from all directions.

It is pixel graphics, but not so cheap. They do look like love-obsessed, hand-drawn graphics. Lighting works great too; it makes every room feel dark and scary. Explosions of the enemies look messy but satisfying; blood splatters everywhere, and one ends up feeling rewarded for surviving some nasty encounters.

Another standout feature is the weaponry you’ve got: shotguns and rifles and even rocket launchers (basic stuff, right?). And yet they’ve got some variety. Each has an alternate version that hits harder or acts differently, so no two fights are the same. The enemies change too; they grow into nastier versions, while some even change forms in the midst of a fight. That did catch me off guard several times.

Then there is the music: heavy guitar riffs, drums pounding like a fight. With headphones on, I felt like I was actually in the middle of a live concert with monsters to battle. During some of the boss fights, I even caught myself headbanging, which just enhanced the fun.
