SOMA is a sci-fi horror game developed by Frictional Games, the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Unlike a typical survival horror story, SOMA’s story has a candid and brutal approach to the questions of identity, the human mind, and what happens when machines begin to behave like people.
The radio had stopped working; food was almost finished; the machines believed they were human. The underwater facility PATHOS II was completely cut off from the world, and it is at that juncture that the player must make some very hard decisions. What, then, is left to be protected? What is worthy of any struggle?
I must say that playing this game late at night with headphones put me in an eerie state, and there was no other way of feeling this. The corridors were mostly empty, and all I could hear were strange mechanical sounds that sent chills down my spine.
The Gameplay Experience
The world of SOMA takes you down, way down under the ocean. You explore terminals, read documents, and slowly begin to piece together what went wrong in the facility. All the while, you meet a couple of last survivors and try to understand the real truth about PATHOS II.
There are plenty of threats waiting. You will observe that there are corrupted humans, machines that have gone rogue, strange underwater creatures, and an extremely possessive brain constituting the AI.
A crucial aspect of the game is that you are not able to fight back. If something comes for you, then you either run or try to outsmart it. That, for me, added a sense of realism to the fear; I had nothing I could rely on by way of a weapon.
