So the first time I played Static Dread: The Lighthouse, I thought, like most spooky indie games, that this would be thrilling. However, actual gameplay completely enveloped the experience in an enthralling atmosphere. Slow and creepy, it also makes the player feel stranded on that desolate island with nothing except the sea and odd sounds. It is not one of those jump-scare-grabbing games. Instead, it makes your skin crawl with eerie silence and strange things happening in the distance.

You are the lighthouse keeper who has been sent to a decaying old lighthouse after a world disaster. Your job is to keep the light burning for ships to find their way. But it gets stranger with every night spent there. Villagers from the nearby fishing town keep doing creepy sea rituals. Sometimes you hear ships that come back empty with no crew. You never know if you are just imagining things or if something really bad is waiting for you out there.

I remember one night in the game when I was just checking the area, and I saw a shadow moving far away on the shore. I thought it was just the wind or waves, but it felt too real. That’s the kind of moment that makes this game so unsettling.

Gameplay

Experience a journey walking through the game, combined with light puzzle-solving. You need to keep the lighthouse running, check for creepy stuff every now and again, and sometimes mingle with the villagers. Such actions would impact the storyline and how it ends, making it far from a linear tale. There are several endings depending on how you handle certain situations, adding to the potential replay value.

Not all about action. Most of it is watching and feeling the tension build instead. One day, you just watch the sea; what will happen next?

Story

Without spoiling much of it, the story involves surviving, being responsible, and perhaps going mad. The outside world is falling apart because of a massive disaster, and you are one of those few lighthouses working among the last few remaining. Somewhere far away, your family awaits you. Thus, a sense of entrapment between one’s duty and a pull to home was developed.

Why You Should Try This Game

If you like games where no one holds your hand and throws you into a strange, lonely situation, this would probably be the game for you. It’s not that long, but it leaves quite a punch. Heavy atmosphere, and each sound makes you question what’s really going on. I think the best part is how the game makes you feel that you are actually there, with the cold sea wind and the eternal sounds of waves crashing against the rocks.
