Superhero Games Overview – Gamescom 2025
Gamescom 2025 is gearing up to be the biggest superhero event in gaming in many years. The Cologne Expo is a huge event, with over 1500 companies exhibiting their projects. While it is normal for one to expect announcements for such horror titles as Resident Evil or classic RPGs, this year it seems the limelight has moved to superhero games.
I still remember back when I was younger, watching the streams for Gamescom for the first time. I would stay awake, snacking and just looking out to see what games of Marvel or DC were coming. The excitement this year is just that, except way bigger. Major studios are finally taking superhero gaming seriously, and Gamescom 2025 is the platform for it.
Marvel Games at Gamescom 2025
Marvel is pushing a lot of the big projects. Arkane Studios, developers of Prey and Dishonored, are making Marvel’s Blade. It is a single-player action game scheduled to release in November 2027. Gamescom could hold the first proper trailer of gameplay, which could even prove to be the entire show’s highlight. Blade is infamous for his dark style; seeing Arkane tackle it has me very hopeful.
Another one is Marvel’s Iron Man from EA. The game is being made using Unreal Engine 5 and promises to be an RPG-style open-world experience. For now, though, it remains behind closed doors due to EA’s focus on Battlefield. To be frank, however, if they can pull off the flying mechanics, it would be the best Iron Man experience.
Then comes Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra from Skydance Interactive. The game allows players to commandeer Captain America and Azzuri during World War II alongside a small group of allies. The Unreal Engine 5 trailer looked downright insane, but we are still awaiting some proper gameplay footage. It has unfortunately been delayed to early 2026, but I would say it will be worth the wait.
DC and Lego Games at Gamescom 2025
DC is definitely not lagging behind. Rocksteady is said to be developing a new Batman project, and dammit, NetherRealm might ignite the hype with Injustice 3. Fans are already speculating on what the story may be if these rumors turn out to be true.
Plus, Lego Batman could be lining up for a return. Warner Bros. is promoting projects revolving around both DC and Harry Potter, hence a new Lego superhero game feels quite plausible. I personally grew up playing Lego Batman with my cousins, and the thought of a new one hits the nostalgic spot hard.
Other Big Games at Gamescom 2025
Though superheroes are the show’s main focus, Gamescom 2025 harbors heavy-hitters. Resident Evil 9 will shock horror enthusiasts once again. Ninja Gaiden 4 is making a comeback, which is great news for action gamers. And of course, World of Warcraft will continue its fresh updates.
These titles right here show that Gamescom is not just a superhero bash, but they do provide a balance in the awesome. There is something in store for every fan in every genre to be excited about.
Game-Developing Studios
One thing I love about Gamescom is that it highlights the studios. This year, we see:
Arkane Studios is bringing Marvel’s Blade
EA is working on Marvel’s Iron Man
Skydance Interactive is developing Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra
AdHoc Studios is surprising everybody with Dispatch
Rocksteady and NetherRealm are arguably pushing DC’s next big games
These studios have their own design philosophies that I am excited about. Based on their history, I think we can expect some of the most innovative superhero games we’ve seen in years.
Dispatch: A Different Kind of Superhero Game
Among all the heavyweights from Marvel and DC, there is also Dispatch from AdHoc Studios, a rather unconventional kind of superhero game. You control Robert, a superhero whose combat mech suit breaks. Instead of saving cities, he spends his time working in a dispatch center. The way they blend comedy and storytelling feels quite fresh. With voice talents from Laura Bailey and Aaron Paul, the gameplay is akin to that of Telltale titles, really putting this on my personal wishlist.
Significance of Gamescom 2025 for Superhero Games
Gamescom 2025 is more than just a mere expo. It appears to be a place where the very future of superhero gaming is being formed. From dark action-adventure like Blade to family-friendly Lego titles, fans from all age groups have something to look forward to.
