In SWAT Commander, you step into the role of the person in charge of an elite special weapons and tactics team. This game aims to feel as real as possible, taking inspiration from both older tactical games and real-life situations where such units are called in to handle dangerous threats.
Your squad will follow your commands, but they also act on their own depending on the situation. You have to give the right orders, but at the same time, you are not just sitting back watching — you are right there in the action, doing a lot of the work yourself.
As a trained operative, you will be sent on risky missions that can include hostage rescues, stopping armed robberies, breaking up gang fights, and more. You can complete these missions with computer-controlled teammates or team up with friends in co-op mode with up to five players.
Before each mission, you can choose the right gear for your team depending on their role. Whether they are attacking, defending, or providing support, their equipment matters a lot. You also need to pay close attention to the mission briefing and study any intel you get before going in.
The missions take place in many different places, such as office buildings, industrial sites, or even large old mansions. You must know the routes your team will take, where the cover spots are, and where possible threats or civilians might be. Being careless can cost you the mission.
The game lets you plan moves with a special order queue system so your team can act in the right sequence without confusion. This makes it possible to carry out clean and well-organized actions instead of rushing in and making mistakes.
I played one mission where we had to clear an office building during a hostage crisis. At first, I rushed in and got caught in crossfire. On the second try, I took it slow, gave clear orders, and we saved all hostages without losing a teammate. That’s when I realized this game rewards patience and planning more than quick shooting.
