When I first read about Tim Harkness Jr. and his wife, Stephie Smegal, I found it really sweet how long they had been together. Thirty-six years is quite an achievement. I’ve seen couples break up over minor issues, but these two stayed strong and kept their family close. It feels nice to see a long marriage like this, especially with all the stress life can bring.
Tim Jr always speaks about his wife with love. Stephie prefers to stay quiet and out of the spotlight. She lets him manage the baseball world while she cares for the family. I know someone in my own family who is similar, always supporting from the background, so I appreciate how important this kind of partner is. Even though she stays private, Tim Jr still shares moments with her on birthdays and during family events. Their family seems very warm.

Tim Jr and Stephie have two sons. They also have daughters-in-law and grandchildren. Most of the time, their photos online show them looking relaxed and happy. It’s nice when a family remains close like that. It feels genuine.
The baseball legacy continues. Tim Jr is the son of Canadian baseball player Tim Harkness. His father, born Thomas William Harkness on December 23 in Lachine, Quebec, played professional baseball. He started with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1961 and later played for the New York Mets in 1963 and 1964. Even though his time in MLB was brief, he stayed involved in baseball as a scout and contributed to the sport.
Sadly, he passed away on November 30 in Courtice, Ontario, at the age of eighty-seven. He left behind his son, Tim Jr., and his grandsons, Dylan and Brodie. When I read that, it reminded me of how families carry memories forward.
Tim Jr. has also made a name for himself as a baseball coach in Ontario. He has been coaching young talent for many years. He became head coach of the Clarington Orioles from 2006 to 2009. After that, he worked with OBJ as an associate coach until 2013. Later, he spent many years as an assistant coach at Durham College from 2015 to 2023. That’s a long tenure.

In recent years, he joined the Oshawa Legionaires and coached their fifteen U Elite team in 2023 and 2024. Then he moved to the 16U Elite team for 2024 and 2025. Soon, he will lead the eighteen U Elite team for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. He has also coached the Durham College Lords and helped many college players develop.
His sons, Dylan and Brodie, also played college baseball, showing that the baseball spirit runs strong through the whole family. My cousins also follow in their father’s footsteps in sports, so this part felt familiar to me.
In case you didn’t know, Tim Harkness was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies before the 1956 season. Later, he was traded to the Dodgers. On April 17, 1964, he became the first Mets player to get a hit at Shea Stadium. That’s a pretty cool moment in baseball history.
